Reducing nitrogen pollution in water systems in China
Reducing nitrogen (N) pollution in water systems is important for China, given the national ambition to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This study explored future solutions to reduce N pollution in Chinese rivers and coastal waters, and to meet SDGs 6 and 14. Results show that it is difficult to meet SDGs 6 and 14 in China in 2050. Options that may help to reduce N pollution in water systems are improved nutrient management in agriculture and in sewage systems, efficient food consumption and climate mitigation. These options may, as a side effect, also contribute to other SDGs.
