A vision for future nitrogen management

Nitrogen management needs to progress immensely over the coming decades if humanity is to return to a safe planetary boundary. This requires innovation in technology to develop more site-specific management techniques, and creative policy to incentivize long-lasting changes in farmer and non-farmer behavior. This talk will highlight several potential ways forward to address this seemingly intractable environmental policy issue – from shifting the regulatory burden away from farmers to non-farm actors in the agri-food chain, to transitioning away from synthetic fertilizers altogether. Successfully managing our relationship with nitrogen will be crucial to achieving all the Sustainable Development Goals.
